REVIEW - Avenue Q

Avenue Q is set in a suburb just outside of New York. It combines actors and puppets. Basically Sesame for Grown Up’s. Classic songs such as “It Sucks To To Be You”, “Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist” and “I’m Not Wearing Underwear Today” just to name a few. It was a small theatre, slightly bigger than the Cremorne at QPAC but not as big as The Playhouse. I have loved this show ever since I got the soundtrack ages ago. A little known fact is that it was released the same year as Wicked and although Wicked won almost every award at the Tony awards (the American theatre awards), it missed out on the big main super one - Best Musical which went to Avenue Q!

The great thing to read in the Playbill is that although the show is now Off-Broadway, it is still the same set and same orchestrations. Normally shows downsize for off-Broadway but this is such a small and tight show that you really can not cut down on too much. All of the cast were great. Some of the actors were better as certain characters. The lead guy plays two characters Princeton – the lead and Rod – the similarities with Bert from Sesame Street are not hidden at all!!!! His Rod was fantastic! But the Princeton just lacked a little bit of something… The same with the guy who played Nicky (Ernie from Sesame Street) and Treckie Monster (Cookie Monster), His Nicky wasn’t quite right but totally nailed the Treckie Monster!

It was so good to see the storyline that goes along with this show! I know every song inside out and now know what some of the things are actually talking about! There is ‘Full Puppet Nudity” in one of the funniest scenes I have seen on stage! This is such a fantastically simple show yet so funny. It will be in Brisbane soon. Don’t take your Grandma to it, or your children – but do take your friends. It is a great laugh and it will be interesting to see how the Australian cast go.

REASON FOR SEEING: To see something Off Broadway AND to have seen something in Broadway, West End, Brisbane within 3 months!
BEST OF: Funniest show, a fun night at the theatre
