I bought the soundtrack to this show a couple of months ago. There was lots of hype over it. It didn’t win the Tony for Best Musical but did win Best Score and as a Musical Director that is sometimes more interest to me! The CD hadn’t really done anything for me because I sort of found the story hard to follow but was determined to see something I had never seen and all the reviews were very positive… I am SO glad I went. I don’t want to talk too much about it because it will give away major plot elements which will spoil it for you.
But basically a ‘mom’ is trying to keep her family under control while she is falling apart. She is going a bit mental, and sees some therapists etc… Such powerful performances from everyone involved. A new actor had just taken over as the son and it was his first performance and he looked so natural – I know they are professional and you expect that – but the rest of the cast are the same that there has been since it’s pre-broadway trials and this guy fitted in perfectly. I didn’t realize this until after the show when I got home, but it now made sense why he got some extra loud claps and cheers!
The set was AMAZING. Three levels of scaffold split into three. Basically 9 performance spaces with the band separated throughout all of them. All very simple but so effective. I didn’t quite get to ‘tear’ status (I think I may have been the only one in the theatre who didn’t) but definitely had the lump in the back of the throat…
This is a very well crafted piece of theatre. The music is great! It is on of the most faultless performances I have ever seen.
REASON FOR SEEING: Something Brand New, Lots of hype
BEST OF: Best overall show
